Q&A

Q Can double eyelid, eye bag, or other oculoplastic procedures be done as same-day surgery?
A

Yes. Procedures performed at our clinic are typically done on a same-day (outpatient) basis.

Q Are your doctors focused on oculoplastic surgery? Do they also treat medical eye conditions?
A

OU Oculoplastic Clinic specializes in oculoplastic and periocular reconstructive surgery, including treatment of thyroid eye disease, entropion and ectropion, eyelid ptosis, and reconstructive procedures after eyelid tumor removal.
All attending surgeons are board-certified ophthalmologists with subspecialty training in oculoplastic surgery, and they remain actively involved in international medical conferences and academic research.

Q How many follow-up visits will I need after surgery?
A

A typical follow-up schedule is:
• First visit: around day 7 after surgery (for suture removal if appropriate)
• Second visit: around 3 months after surgery (to assess the result once swelling has fully resolved)
• Additional visits: scheduled individually by your doctor based on your healing progress.

Q How much swelling should I expect after surgery? How long should I plan to take off from work?
A

Swelling varies by individual and by procedure, but for most oculoplastic surgeries, swelling usually peaks around 2–3 days after surgery. Sutures are typically removed around day 7, with noticeable reduction in swelling over the following two weeks. A more natural final appearance may take 1–3 months.
If your job allows, we recommend taking at least 5–7 days off after surgery.

Q When can I wash my face or wear makeup after surgery?
A

We generally recommend gentle cleansing around the incision site only after suture removal, which is usually around day 7.
Makeup may be resumed once the wound has healed adequately, typically around 10 days after surgery, depending on individual recovery.

Q Will there be a preoperative simulation of the results?
A

Yes. The doctor will use specialized probes and simulation techniques to help estimate the post-operative appearance, allowing you and the surgeon to share a clear and realistic expectation of the results.

Q Are there before-and-after photos I can look at?
A

Yes. You can browse example cases on our website, as well as in the highlight sections of our official Instagram account, where we share more before-and-after results from OU Oculoplastic Clinic.

Q Are there any dietary or lifestyle restrictions before and after surgery?
A

One week before surgery:
• Stop using double eyelid tapes or stickers for at least one week.
• Discontinue blood-thinning medications (such as aspirin) only after consulting the doctor who originally prescribed them.
• Stop all nutritional supplements, such as fish oil, ginkgo, ginseng, and vitamin E.
• Avoid smoking and alcohol from one week before surgery until one month after surgery.

During the first 1–2 weeks after surgery, please avoid:
• Smoking, drinking alcohol, and staying up late
• High-sodium foods (to reduce swelling)
• Prolonged head-down posture or looking down at your phone for long periods (to reduce the risk of bleeding)

Q If I have dry eye disease, can I still undergo surgery?
A

Yes, but a more detailed evaluation is required.
If you have significant dry eye, trichiasis, or abnormal tear function, the doctor will first help stabilize these conditions before determining whether surgery is appropriate.

Q Do you accept patients from other regions or overseas?
A

Yes, we welcome patients from other parts of Taiwan and from overseas. We can arrange an initial online consultation to assess whether surgery is suitable and to help you plan your trip. If you wish to combine your consultation and surgery within a single visit, please contact us in advance so we can coordinate scheduling and preparations.

Q Can I schedule surgery directly without a prior consultation?
A

For reasons of medical safety and responsibility, a face-to-face evaluation by the doctor is required before any surgery.
We are unable to schedule surgery based solely on photos or reports from other clinics.

Q Can I have surgery on only one eye?
A

Yes. Some patients naturally have asymmetrical eyes, or their concern may affect only one side. After careful evaluation, the doctor may recommend surgery on just one eye if that is sufficient to achieve overall symmetry.

Q Do you accept credit cards or installment payments?
A

At present, we accept payment by cash or bank transfer.
If you have specific needs regarding payment arrangements, please let us know in advance, and we will do our best to assist you in planning.

Q How is OU’s oculoplastic surgery different from general cosmetic eye procedures?
A

We emphasize a balance between eye function and aesthetics.
At OU Oculoplastic Clinic, surgeries are performed by specialists with dual training in ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery, making our team particularly suited for more complex or delicate procedures around the eyes.

Q What types of oculoplastic procedures are available at OU Oculoplastic Clinic?
A

Our services include, but are not limited to:
• Double eyelid surgery
• Revision double eyelid surgery
• Ptosis correction (levator muscle surgery)
• Sub-brow excision
• Medial and lateral canthoplasty (inner and outer corner eye surgery)
• Transconjunctival and external eye bag surgery
• Revision lower eyelid bag surgery
• Single eyelid enlargement procedures
• Entropion and ectropion correction
• Treatments for dry eye disease
• Trichiasis (inward-growing eyelashes)
• Nasolacrimal duct obstruction treatment
• Orbital decompression surgery for thyroid eye disease
• Eyelid tumor management
• Eyelid retraction correction

Q Is there an age limit for surgery?
A

In general, patients aged 18 or older can be evaluated for surgery.
For younger patients with functional issues, such as congenital eyelid problems or significant drooping, the doctor will assess the condition and determine whether surgery is appropriate.

Q Will the surgery be done under local anesthesia or general anesthesia?
A

Most upper eyelid procedures are performed under local anesthesia so that you can open your eyes during surgery for crease and contour assessment.
For lower eyelid procedures or certain medical eyelid surgeries, either local anesthesia or sedation/general anesthesia may be used, depending on your condition and the surgical plan.

Q How much does surgery cost? Is it covered by National Health Insurance?
A

Fees vary depending on the type and complexity of the procedure. The doctor will provide a detailed explanation after your initial evaluation.
OU Oculoplastic Clinic is a self-pay clinic; consultations and surgeries are not covered by National Health Insurance.

Q If I’m unable to undergo surgery as scheduled, can I reschedule?
A

Yes. Please inform us at least one month before your scheduled surgery if you need to cancel or reschedule, so we can properly adjust the surgical schedule and staffing.

Q If I’ve had eyelid surgery before, can I still undergo revision?
A

Yes. Many patients come to us for revision procedures, such as overly high double eyelids, asymmetry, visible scars, irregular creases, or residual ptosis. The doctor will evaluate whether the condition can be improved.

Q How can I book a consultation or surgical evaluation?
A

You may book an appointment by phone, and our staff will assist you in arranging a suitable time.
You may also contact us through our official LINE account, and our team will respond to your inquiry.

Q What examinations will be performed during my first visit? Do I need to prepare anything?
A

Depending on your concerns, the doctor will arrange appropriate functional and structural examinations of the eye area. These may include visual acuity testing, tear secretion evaluation, intraocular pressure measurement, meibomian gland assessment, and exophthalmos measurement.
For oculoplastic surgery consultations, if you normally require vision correction, please wear your contact lenses on the day of your visit and allow sufficient time for a complete evaluation.
